Mourning Dove

This is the the most abundant dove on the  Gulf Coast . The call is a mournful oowoo-woo-woo-woo .

The wings produce a fluttering whistle as the bird takes flight. More than 30 million birds are legally

harvested as game every year.

 

White-winged Dove

Large white wing patches and shorter, rounded tail distinguish this species from

the Mourning Dove. The drawn-out,cooing call, who-cooks-for-you , has many variations.

It is rare in winter,uncommon in spring, occasional in summer, and uncommon in the

fall on the Alabama coast.

The White-winged Dove flies fast with heavy wingbeats, and is a game bird.

The adult male has a grayish or grayish brown head and neck, with neck and breast washed lightly with pink; iris reddish brown; orbital skin bright blue; bill black; and feet brighy red.

This species was introduced to the Bahamas and spread throughout Florida and 

along the Gulf Coast.The song is soft continual cooing hoo-hoooo-hoo with emphasis

on the second syllable; also a complaining mair.
